Avon Connecticut Library Offers Free Online Classes

Residents of Avon now can do all this and more with just a library card and a computer.

Thanks to a one-year grant from the Avon’s Friends of the Library, residents in this community are getting the opportunity to learn – for free.

Through Universal Class, an accredited online learning site, Avon residents can choose from over 500 continuing education courses. With topics ranging from American Civil War 101, to career enhancers like Accounting & Bookkeeping 101 for Beginners, to the esoteric likeTarot Cards, the selection is vast.

Patrons can take up to five classes at once, having six months to finish each course. Library officials say the courses typically only take around a month to finish. Though the courses are free, any additionally materials or textbooks are the students’ responsibility.

Students have one-on-one contact with instructors via email, earning CEU – or continuing education units for the courses they take. No diplomas or certificates are awarded.

The only two requirements are the person must be a resident of Avon and have a valid library card.
